Beit Bridge to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

After crossing the border from South Africa to Zimbabwe at Beit Bridge the carriages of the “Union Limited Zambezi” train were handed over to the National Railways of Zimbabwe.  A diesel locomotive hauled the train overnight to Heany Junction, just to the east of Bulawayo, where a Garratt steam locomotive was waiting to take the train on to Bulawayo first thing in the morning of 29/7/1992.

At this date there was still considerable steam-hauled freight in Zimbabwe, shunting around Bulawayo, and museum steam locomotives could be hired to pull trains.

While the tour train was being re-provisioned in Bulawayo station there was the opportunity to watch and photograph the Garratts shunting nearby.
