Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, to Johannesburg, South Africa

Returning to Bulawayo station after visiting the Railway Museum found the tour train ready for the return journey back to Johannesburg in South Africa.

1-of-5)  National Railways of Zimbabwe 20A class 'Garratt' 4-8-2+2-8-4 locomotive no. 740 'Ingwezi' (built by Beyer Peacock in 1957) ready to head the ‘Union Limited Zambezi’ on the first stage back to South Africa at Bulawayo station, Zimbabwe, 7th August 1992.  It has evidently had a superficial rub down with paraffin soaked rags in an attempt to clean it, but the dirt has proved very stubborn.

2-of-5)  National Railways of Zimbabwe 20A class 'Garratt' 4-8-2+2-8-4 locomotive no. 740 'Ingwezi' (built by Beyer Peacock in 1957) performs a run-past between Bulawayo and Heany Junction, Zimbabwe, as it heads the ‘Union Limited Zambezi’ tour train on the first stage back to South Africa, 7th August 1992.  I was fortunate to have a footplate ride on this locomotive around here and the main memory is of the very loud noise of the steam jets of the mechanical stoker as they directed the coal around the firebox.  These were the only NRZ locomotives fitted with these stokers.
