Bareilly, India, 27/12/1993

Photographs of trains and locomotives at Bareilly Junction and Bareilly City locomotive shed, to the east of Delhi.

The tour group arrived at dawn on an overnight train at Bareilly Junction station, which had both metre gauge and broad gauge tracks.  Minibuses took the group to a hotel for breakfast before they headed to Bareilly City metre gauge locomotive shed for a look round.  Returning to Bareilly Junction station again there were a couple of hours to see what passed through and for a quick visit to the broad gauge locomotive shed, before catching a mid-afternoon train on to Gorakhpur.

By this date broad gauge steam was dying out very rapidly, though there was still considerable activity on the metre gauge due to retaining steam traction until gauge conversion to broad gauge.  This made it uneconomic to manufacture metre gauge diesel locomotives which would only be used for a short period.  Sadly, Bareilly Junction locomotive shed was home to just a handful of cold broad gauge locomotives.

Apparently derelict broad gauge locomotive shed at Bareilly Junction, India, 27th December 1993

12-of-13) The broad gauge locomotive shed at Bareilly Junction.  Disappointingly the shed was apparently derelict.  There were just two cold locomotives here, the track was rusty, and the workmen were just standing around.  In the foreground is a smokebox door from a steam locomotive.
